“ZIKE!” SILAS CALLED out. Baby and Muffin recognized the command, flanked their master, then sat at his side and stared at the two strangers. Baby chuffed; Muffin growled.

Walter Tubbs took a step forward. “Who the fuck are you?” he demanded.

Silas smiled. “You can call me the caretaker for this property.”

Walter glanced at the surrounding buildings. “If this is you taking care of the place, you’re doing a pretty shitty job.”

Silas shrugged. “The extent of my duties and responsibilities and how well I may or may not execute them is none of your concern. You’re trespassing. You need to leave.”

Baby and Muffin reacted to the hostility in Silas’s voice. The dogs stood, ready to attack if given the command.

Ezekiel zeroed in on the dog’s body language. “I think we should do as he says, Walter,” he said. He turned his attention to Silas. “Sorry, mister. You’ll have to forgive my brother. He sometimes forgets his manners.”

Silas nodded. “So it seems.”

“Fuck you, old man!” Walter yelled.

Silas looked at Ezekiel, smiled. “Case and point.”

Ezekiel nodded. “We’re sorry to have troubled you. We’ll be on our way.”

Walter objected. “What the hell, Zeke! You actually believe this guy?”

“It doesn’t matter if I believe him or not,” Ezekiel replied. “It’s obvious he was here first. We need to respect that and leave.”

Silas smiled. He turned to Walter. “It’s pretty easy to tell which of the two of you is the smart one.”

Walter took a step towards Silas. “What did you say?”

Baby and Muffin stepped forward, bared their teeth, their growls deeper, more menacing.

Walter looked ahead, stared at the dogs. “I’d like to see how tough you are without your dogs.”

Silas smiled. “That can be arranged.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Absolutely,” Silas said. He touched each animal on its head. Baby and Muffin looked up. Silas pointed to the saloon. “Choku,” he said, then clapped his hands together. The dogs responded immediately. They ran to the saloon, bounded up the stairs, and disappeared into the building. Silas turned to Walter. “There you go,” he said. “The dogs are gone. Now, what exactly did you have in mind?”

Walter balled his fists, walked forward. “I’m gonna mess you up, old man.”

Silas put his hands in his pockets. “Is that so?”

“Fucking right.”

“All right,” Silas said. “But before you do, can I ask you one question?”

“What?”

“Are you left or right-handed?”

Walter stopped. “What kind of stupid question is that?”

“A simple one. I wouldn’t ask you anything complicated. Your brain wouldn’t be able to handle it.”

“That’s enough, Walter,” Ezekiel warned. “Knock it off.”

Walter ignored his brother, raised his hand, pointed his finger at Silas. “That’s gonna cost you big time, assho—.”

A gunshot rang out.

Shocked and unsure what to make of the sound, Walter paused while his brain made the connection between the feeling of fire coursing through his right hand and the sudden absence of his right index finger.

Silas removed his hand from his pocket, produced the gun, pointed it at the two men. “You didn’t think I’d be that stupid, did you?” he asked.

Walter fell to his knees, gripped his hand, began to scream.
